Help my girlfriend and I settle a debate 🛋️🤔

This is the living room of my 1 bedroom NYC apartment (where Spoken started!). I'd describe our style as "contemporary chic with a dash of mid-century modern.” My girlfriend wants to put shelves with books above the couch, but I’m thinking a painting or some art.
